The Kerala High Court ordered the Palakkad tahsildar to hand over the buffaloes in the municipality's custody to an authorized representative of People for Animals on Friday (PFA). PFA, an organization concerned about the welfare of buffaloes, and Ahimsa Farm Animal Sanctuary, which were discovered abandoned in a private property, filed a petition with Justice TR Ravi. The petitioner organization had asked the Court to order that the buffaloes' custody be transferred, claiming that the animals are in distress, that they are not being properly cared for, and that several of them are dying. The Court had previously issued an interim order directing the concerned Veterinary Surgeon to inspect the animals housed in a Municipality building and to ensure that they received the medical attention they required. Following that, the Bench directed the petitioners to record how they planned to transport the animals to Thiruvananthapuram if they were allowed to take custody of the animals.

The petitioner's lawyer, Bhanu Thilak, testified that the animals would be transported from Palakkad to the Ahimsa Farm Animal Sanctuary in Kollam. They promised to take all necessary precautions to transport them safely in three trips on a Bharat Benz truck. They also agreed to provide the buffaloes with the necessary medical care and that no harm would be done to them during the transportation. On these grounds, the Court ordered PFA to produce the necessary authorization and identification, allowing the tahsildar to ensure that the animals were delivered to the correct person. The petitioners' representative was also directed to give the tahsildar an undertaking similar to what they said in court, and upon receipt of such an undertaking, the tahsildar may proceed to hand over the animals to the representative. While transporting the animals, the petitioners must adhere to all of the undertakings given to the court, the Bench emphasized. The petitioners were also praised for volunteering to care for these abandoned animals, despite the fact that they were in Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam, respectively.
