Amid the Islamic Republic’s tremendous political instability Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan nominated the name of former chief justice of Pakistan Gulzar Ahmed for the office of ‘caretaker prime minister’ of the country until new elections are held and according to the authorities, new elections will be held within the next 90 days. Gulzar Ahmed started his career as an advocate in 1986. He joined the Sindhu High Court bar association and then the Supreme Court Bar association before becoming the justice of the Sindhu High Court.

Gulzar Ahmed was sworn in as the 27th chief justice of Pakistan on December 21, 2019, and he served as the chief justice till February 2022. He made the headlines multiple times due to his strong verdicts and comments against the government and bureaucrats. Gulzar Ahmed was part of a five-judge bench that disqualified former prime minister Nawaz Sharif in the Panama Papers case. The announcement related to the office of caretaker prime minister’s nomination was made by former Pakistan Minister for Information and Broadcasting and senior leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Fawad Chaudhary. He said that this decision is made by Imran Khan after the approval from the PTI’s core committee. The announcement comes after President Arif Alvi sent letters to Prime Minister Imran Khan and leader of opposition Shehbaz Sharif on Monday seeking suggestions for the appointment of a caretaker prime minister. The nomination of the caretaker PM comes in the backdrop of the Pakistan National Assembly being dissolved by the president after the no-trust motion was disallowed by the National Assembly deputy speaker. The Pakistan Supreme Court resumed its hearing into a suo moto notice over ongoing political turmoil after Qasim Suri dismissed a no-confidence motion against khan, following which parliament was dissolved by the president.

President appoints a caretaker PM, with the consultation of the Prime Minister and the leader of the opposition, but in a situation when both the parties do not agree on the same, then, in such condition president has the power to choose the caretaker prime minister in consultation with the Election Commission of Pakistan. Post of caretaker prime minister is designated to run the government temporarily until the permanent Prime Minister is chosen through elections, after the dissolution of the National Assembly having the motive of free and fair elections. President Arif Alvi said Imran Khan will continue as Pakistan prime minister till the appointment of a caretaker PM under Article 224(A)(4) of the constitution. President Alvi said that in case the PM and the opposition do not agree on the proposed name within three days of the dissolution of the assembly, they should forward the names of the two nominees each to a committee to be immediately constituted by the speaker to the National Assembly.

‘‘The committee will have eight members of the assembly, or senate, or both, with equal representation from the treasury and the opposition, to be appointed by the Prime Minister and the leader of the opposition, respectively’’. Fawad Chaudhary said, ‘‘In response to the president’s letter, after the consultation and approval by the PTI core committee, Prime Minister has nominated the name of Pakistan’s former chief justice for the post of caretaker prime minister’’. The letter came a day after the National Assembly deputy speaker disallowed a no-trust confidence motion against Prime Minister Imran Khan and the president dissolved the lower house of parliament on the former’s advice. CJP Umar Ata Bandial said the court will issue reasonable orders after considering the legality of the current situation.
