The Supreme Court has upheld the West Bengal government's fourth FIR against OpIndia editor Nupur Sharma. In conjunction with OpIndia's coverage of the Telinipara riots in Bengal in 2020, a FIR was filed. The term "initial information report" refers to information presented to a police officer on duty by the aggrieved person or anybody else about the occurrence of an alleged crime. The police begin their investigation based on the initial information report. What constitutes initial information is defined in Section 154 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973.

What is the purpose of a First Information Report? (FIR) The term "initial information report" refers to information presented to a police officer on duty by the aggrieved person or anybody else about the occurrence of an alleged crime. The police begin their investigation based on the initial information report. First report on the situation. The individual providing information or filing a complaint has the right to request that the police read the information to him or her. The individual providing the information must sign the information once it has been recorded by the police. The Supreme Court on Friday halted the proceedings in connection with a first information report (FIR) filed by West Bengal Police against OpIndia editor Nupur Sharma. On a petition filed by Sharma, a bench of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and MM Sundresh issued the judgement in response to a FIR filed in connection with OpIndia's coverage of the Telinipara riots in Bengal in 2020.

In a decision issued on Friday, the Court stated, "Further proceedings in pursuit of FIR No. 140/2020 lodged at Bhadreswar Police Station shall be stayed." According to the petitioner, the fourth FIR was the latest in a series of malicious FIRs lodged against OpIndia. Three FIRs filed by the West Bengal government against four people, three of whom were affiliated with OpIndia, were stayed by the Supreme Court in June 2020. The interim orders issued in the main writ suit are also rendered absolute, according to the Court's ruling issued on Friday. The case has been rescheduled for a non-miscellaneous day in November 2021. Sharma was represented by senior attorney Mahesh Jethmalani and advocate Ravi Sharma.
