The race for the new Prime Minister position in United Kingdom after the resignation of the former Prime Minister Boris Johnson. The Resignation was done by Boris Johnson after the former health Secretary Sajid Javid’s resignation from his position. The resignation of Javid has also bought down the power of Boris Johnson, which led to his resignation from the Prime Minister’s position. Currently there are top three contestants out of the 8 contestants who nominated for the PM’s position.

The race for the Prime Minister’s position in the United Kingdom has begun and there were nominations for the position. There were several rounds of elimination for getting down to the final two major players who are worthy of the position. The parliament has conducted 6 rounds till the 19th of July. The 7th round of polls is to be conducted on the 21st of July, 2022 to decide the final winner who is then going to occupy the position of the Prime Minister.

The 8 nominees are Rishi Sunak, Liz Truss, Penny Mordaunt, Kemi Badenoch, Tom Tugendhat, Suella Braverman, Nadhim Zahawi and Jeremy Hunt. Each candidate was required to show 20 supporter legislators on their ballot, but in the first round of elimination two of the candidates failed to acquire the required support in their favour. Those are Sajid Javid and Jeremy Hunt who failed to gather 20 legislators in support of them which led to the elimination of both the nominees in the first round. From the second round, the lowest gets eliminated, and there is no limited number of legislative supporters a nominee can bring onto his back and in the second round, Nadhim Zahawi was eliminated on the 1st ballot with 23 votes.

In the third round of the polls, Suella Braverman was eliminated on the 2nd ballot with 30+ votes on the 1st ballot and 20+ votes on the 2nd ballot, which was low compared to other nominees. In the fourth round, Tom Tugendhat was eliminated from the race on the 3rd ballot having less than the previous two ballots. He got around 30 votes on the 3rd ballot. In the fifth round of polls, Kemi Badenoch was eliminated having the lowest number of votes in the 4th ballot with around 59 votes. But the fourth ballot votes of Kemi were high compared to her previous ballots.

In the 6th round of the polls, Penny Mordaunt was eliminated for having fewer votes in the 5th ballot which was around 105 votes. Having the lowest compared to the other two nominees, she got eliminated. This 6th round of polls was conducted on the 19th of July 2022. The Parliament has decided to have the next round of polls on the 21st of July 2022 the day the parliament breaks the meetings of this year.

The final two contestants are Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss. Both had a close race on the fifth ballot where Rishi secured nearly 150 votes and Truss secured 113 votes. The final person to get onto the Prime Minister’s position will be decided on 21st July 2022. At the same time opposition has made remarks on the ruling government stating that they are afraid of losing in the re-elections.
