A summary report of the medical examination was sent to the Bombay High Court by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in April this year. The medical examination was of Varavara Rao, the submission was mainly done to seek an extension of a medical bail which was granted to him by the Bombay High Court earlier this year. (Varavara Rao has been in the prison for more than two years. He was accused in the Bhima Koregaon case).

In the summary, it was written that V. Rao was suffering from a lack of sleep and strain. It was also submitted that his vital parameters were normal, other than the parameters the rest of the medical examination showed no signs of abnormalities. This reply was filed based on an appeal by V. Rao to seek modifications in the order which was given in late February of 2021. The above order granted him interim medical bail for six months, which was however extended from time to time. Late in November this year, the Bench of Justices Nitin Jamdar and SV Kotwal advised the National Intelligence Agency to admit Varavara Rao to a private hospital for a medical check-up.

Accordingly, the National Investigation Agency took Rao to Nanavati Hospital, a renowned private hospital in Mumbai, where Rao had been admitted earlier. At the hospital, Rao was examined for several medications such as Cardiac, Psychiatry, Urology, and Neurology. The report after the required examinations stated that there was no change in his regular medications. It further stated that he could perform all the activities which he dealt with daily. His overall neurological functions were normal too. However, the counsel appearing for Varavara Rao, Senior Advocate Anand Grover said that the document submitted was a trivial summary of the report and not a medical examination as a whole.

The counsel for Rao demanded a complete examination of Mr Rao's health. However, the Bombay High Court reverted by saying that the report's summary is submitted from a hospital of Grover's preference. Advocate Sandesh Patil, the counsel appearing for the National Investigation Agency notified the Court that while Senior Advocate Grover discusses the issue of the report, Varavara Rao could give in ad interim. The High Court of Bombay has adjourned the hearing to the 20th day of December 2021.
