The High Court at Allahabad appealed to the Prime Minister and the Election Commission of India to postpone the upcoming Uttar Pradesh assembly elections. The main reason for the delay in elections is due to the upsurge in Covid -19 cases. Single Judge Justice Shekhar Yadav said, "Jan hai toh Jahan hain" while appealing to the Prime Minister and the Election Commission of India.
The High Court also expressed its concern on large gatherings within the premises of the Court and said that there is zero maintenance of social distancing. There might be a possibility of a third wave because of the new Omicron variant, feared the Court. The High Court also focused on the sabotage caused by the second wave of the Coronavirus particularly in the state of Uttar Pradesh during its panchayat polls as well as the West Bengal assembly elections.
The Court praised the initiatives of Prime Minister Modi regarding a free vaccination drive throughout the country of India where the population lies in billions. The Court then directed a copy of the order is sent to the following institutions - Registrar General of Allahabad High Court Election Commission Central Government.
