Collegium led by the CJI recommends two more judges for the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court collegium, led by the Chief Justice of India NV Ramana, has recommended the names of the chief justice of two high courts to centre, justice of Gauhati High Court J. Sudhanshu Dhulia and Gujrat High Court Justice Jamshed B. Pardiwala for elevation as a judge of the apex court. The recommendation of these two was made by a 5-membered collegium. The recommendation made by the collegium, if approved by the central government, would ensure that the Supreme Court would regain its full strength of 34 Judges as per the sanction exists. If the centre accepted the recommendation, J Pardiwala would go on to head the judiciary in 2028 and have a tenure of more than two years as CJI. And J Dhulia would have a tenure of little over three years as SC judge. The vacancy arose with the retirement of the Justice R. Shubhash Reddy on 4th January of this year, the total strength of the Supreme Court judges had come down to 32 against the sanctioned strength of 34 and now with the fresh recommendation, if acted upon, will achieve the full strength of the apex court. Justice Dhulia an alumnus of Sainik School, Lucknow was born on August 10, 1960, in Lansdowne and got his early education in Dehradun and Allahabad.

He was elevated as the Judge of HC of Uttarakhand in November 2008 and after he became the Chief Justice of HC of Assam, Mizoram, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh. He completed his primary education in his home town, Valsad. He went to KM Mulji Law College, Valsad to obtain his Law degree in 1988. His father, grandfather and great grandfather were lawyers and they practised in the districts of Valsad and Navsari. Pardiwala started his practice in The HC of Gujrat in 1990. He was also selected as the Standing Counsel for the HC of Gujrat in the year 2002. The collegium system is a forum including the Chief Justice of India and four senior-most judges of the Supreme court, who recommends the appointments and the transfers of the judges. Judges of the Higher Judiciary are only appointed through the collegium system, and the government has the right only after the names have been selected by the collegium. Whenever the office of the judge in the apex court is vacant CJI initiates the proposal and passes on the recommendations to the law minister and these recommendations of the CJI should be in consultation with the members of the collegium. The opinion of the collegium respecting would be made in writing. After receiving the final recommendation of the CJI, the law minister put up the recommendation to the Prime Minister, who will advise the president on the appointment matter.
