The Delhi High Court on the 6th of January, 2022 rejected a plea filed by candidates who longed the postponement of the Civil Services Mains Exam, an examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission. Justice Kameshwar Rao while hearing the plea clarified that the court is not interested in interfering in the matter.
Facts of the Case - A petition was filed in the High Court of Delhi. The petition was filed to delay the UPSC Mains Examination. UPSC Mains Exams are to be held from the 7th of January to the 16th of January. The filing of this petition was mainly due to the surge in the number of Covid -19 cases. The Advocate appearing for the petitioner, Anushree Kapadia said that the Covid -19 cases have been increasing continuously. Thus, in such conditions, if a student contracts the infection, there are high chances that other students can also get infected.
Advocate Anushree Kapadia also argued that there are certain rules and regulations which are inappropriate and not practical enough for the students to implement. Meanwhile, the Advocate appearing for the Union Public Services Commission Naresh Kaushik submitted before the High Court the details of the Prelims Examination. He said that 9 Lakh students had appeared for the Prelims Examination, however, in the Mains Examination only around 9000 students are appearing. He also submitted to the High Court that all the preparations were complete.
The Commission had also arranged for the selection of the centres for the examinees. In such circumstances, putting the examination on hold would be incorrect. Advocate Naresh Kaushik also informed the court that the candidates had already downloaded their admit cards and from Friday the exams will commence. He also mentioned that the supervisors had already reached the centres. The Union Public Service Commission has asked the Government to ensure that no inconvenience is caused to both the candidates and the examination officials.
