The convoy started as a protest against the Liberal govt.'s vaccine mandate, which required unvaccinated Canadian truckers returning from over the US frontier to be quarantined once they returned home. However, it has subsequently evolved into a campaign to repeal all vaccine mandates across the country, as well as what they consider as government overreach with the Covid-19 limitations imposed since the start. How the protest shaped for demand of Canada’s fundamental right to people?
The protest started in the aftermath of COVID vaccine regulation for truckers in Canada. The government issued regulations related to the corona-virus for cross-border drivers making mandatory vaccination. Saturday, 29th January, saw thousands of people including the truckers on the road in the capital dissenting with the government. Protesters continued the protest on Sunday, demanding the regulations to be taken back. The police on Sunday started investigations on the protesters in the cases related to National War Memorial desecration and case of intimidating and threatening police workers during the protests. The police cited the dance by a protester on the National War Memorial- the tomb of the unknown soldier and also the raising of a Swastika Flag during the protest as showing resentment.
Trudeau and his family left their downtown Ottawa residence on Saturday due to security concerns. Trudeau claimed earlier this week that the convoy of protestors represented a "small fringe group" that did not represent Canadians' opinions. Former US President Donald Trump praised Canadian protesters for "resisting heroically these lawless requirements" at a rally in Texas on Saturday, indicating that the pandemic's politicisation had expanded north of the border.
Section 7 of the legal charter says that everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of the person and the right not to be deprived of except in accordance with the principles of fundamental justice. Also, Section of the same Charter says, “The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees the rights and freedoms set out in it subject only to such reasonable limits prescribed by law as can be demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society” That is, if governments take a balanced and reasonable approach, they can genuinely limit people's rights as long as they have a very good cause and can justify why. One of those factors may be a global pandemic. However, they can only go as far as limiting the right to the bare minimum. When the consequences include the spread of a highly contagious infection, stopping individuals from going to a restaurant may be regarded minimally harmful.
